I am confused about the animated banner on the LAUSD website- the first of two frames says, "Ambassador Hotel Honoring the Past..." with a great little nostalgic graphic, and the second frame says, "...Building The Future Ambassador Hotel Project" no graphic with bold lettering.
My question is, what "Honoring" will be taking place- as far as I know, the LAUSD plans to completely demolish the Ambassador! Maybe there will be a plaque that says, "Former location of The Ambassador Hotel." Woo! Big honor.
Or does this signal the possibility the LAUSD will keep the hotel standing? But as what? A hotel, school or offices? And will they further honor the hotel by taking a significant portion of the property to build a giant school? Or maybe their “honoring” will be in the form of selling off the Wilshire parcel for commercial development.
What would honor The Ambassador Hotel most would be to choose another place to put a school (or schools) and to sell the hotel and property back to someone devoted to its complete restoration as a resort hotel and property and save an important piece of Los Angeles history.
The LAUSD kind of reminds me of that old military service joke, which I used to see on T-shirts, something like- Travel to exciting faraway places, meet new and different people, and then kill them.
