Their greatest need is not in building more schools. It is filling all existing classrooms with qualified teachers and providing proper school supplies for each and every child. School books would be a great start.
According to the teacher's union, the average career span of a LAUSD teacher is only 3-5 years. Teachers either quit or they move to another school district.
This is quite disturbing when you learn that it takes a new teacher about three years to develop a solid teaching plan.
Furthermore, several local teachers (who have survived longer than five years) have told me personally that they feel that the school district does not, in fact, place the kids first.
It is my opinion, that the LAUSD has no real moral ground to destroy historical landmarks. With so many pressing and more realistic problems requiring millions of tax dollars, the organization can only shoot themselves in the foot
by destroying such a great piece of property and upsetting communities and organizations worldwide.
But as I've long maintained--the LAUSD school board members are as short-sighted and patronizing as they are ostentatious. They are bullies who know how to milk the system using strong-arm tactics and they have a consistent history of building below par facilities. They are the very lice in "licentious."
Nothing the school district can build on the Ambassador site can replace what they destroy. The best thing we (as concerned citizens) can do--is to continue trying to educate our educators.
