Dear Dan,
If you are trying to imply that the architecture of today far surpasses the grandeur of "Past attempts", you must have your head up your ass. The only thing embarassing in this world is people like you who pretend the past holds nothing to aspire to. We must learn from the past and improve on it. When I look at buildings today, it's obvious (from an aesthetic standpoint), that all the glamour and grandeur of the past has been thrown away. Maybe the reason you think designs of the past are embarassing is because so much of them have been destroyed or are falling apart as we speak.
You say you want to preserve memories. Well I'm 17 and I have no memories of that glamorous era, but I know one thing.. There is nothing in today's architecture that can compare to the grandeur of the past, until we start preserving these landmarks and making an attempt to learn from them, and if possible, improve upon them. Then, maybe, we can say that today's architecture is better. But that would be like saying the Mona Lisa is a piece of trash because it is not new.
