Ralph Story did a show called "More Things That Aren't Here Anymore," which included a great segment on The Ambassador Hotel and Cocoanut Grove; I saw it on March 20, 2001. (He also did one prior called "Things That Aren't Here Anymore," although I'm unsure if it has something on the Ambassador, although I wouldn't be surprised if it did).
It was a KCET production and I've made a search on their website for it, but didn't find it- maybe one of you will. I did notice that a search for "Ambassador Hotel" turned up references in their transcripts, wherever the hotel was mentioned during interviews.
