How you can help--
WRITE OR CALL NOW!
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE THE AMBASSADOR
While the Ambassador Hotel situation appears uncertain at press time, it appears that the key decisions on the hotel's fate will be made by LAUSD staff and by the Board of Education. The Conservancy's ability to save the Ambassador Hotel is only as strong as our members' voices. Please take a moment to write or call your representative on the Board of Education, urging the Board to reuse the Ambassador Hotel as part of a mixed-use complex that could include a school.
Letters to all Board members may be sent to 450 N. Grand Ave., Room A-201, Los Angeles, CA 90012. The members of the Board are:
Genetha Hayes, President.................(213) 625-6382
Victoria Castro..................................(213) 625-6180
David Tokofsky..................................(213) 625-6383
Valerie Fields....................................(213) 625-6387
Mike Lansing.................................... (213) 625-6385
Julie Korenstein.................................(213) 625-6388
Caprice Young...................................(213) 625-6386
Since the Ambassador Hotel is located in Caprice Young's district, it is
particularly important to contact her. Also, members can call or write
Howard Miller, Chief Operating Officer for LAUSD, at the same address and at (213) 625-4033. Please send copies of all correspondence to the Conservancy office for our files.

In your calls and letters, you should emphasize the rich history and
tremendous significance of the Ambassador Hotel, discuss some of the possible uses for the property described in this article, and emphasize that LAUSD could get its desired school faster and less expensively with a preservation-oriented project. In addition, if LAUSD builds the school to the south of the hotel, and partners with a private developer who would rehabilitate the hotel., it's private sector partner would be eligible for significant rehabilitation tax credits that can result in further cost savings. You may also include that historic buildings can be successfully adapted for school uses. For example, the Bullock's Wilshire Department Store just a few blocks down the street has been reused as the Southwestern University Law Library.
Since events are moving quickly on this issue, we also hope you will join the Conservancy's new "Action Alert Network" so that we can keep you informed about developments concerning the important preservation issues in Los Angeles including the Ambassador Hotel.
